How I'd rephrase that: 'Biodiversity is something we need to protect - because of its intrinsic value, and because of our sense of moral responsibility (stewardship). It is also essential to the functioning of our societies.' @Jrockstrom @OurPlanet @IPBES

Biodiversity is the key for the survival of life on this planet. Through Earth's history there have been dramatic events that brought life as such to the brink of extinction. It was only the sheer incredible biodiversity that allowed it to carry on.
