How do we pay for research so that publishers may not paywall the info?

Sorry @ed_averill we are not entirely sure we understand your question. The policies of each publisher vary greatly - some don’t offer the option for open access, others do at significant cost etc.

Many students and ECRs don’t have funding to publish open access papers so if you avoid promoting them then you’re potentially favouring more established researchers.

Indeed - but to do so takes time, some skill and/or IT resources. We want our community to guide our team on how much of this content is wanted in the IPBES feed.
