This is mixing up beekeeping with the issues facing wild bees and other pollinators. Not only that, but the statistics are incorrect. I expect better of IPBES!
"The importance of the #apiculture sector is far greater than its contribution to GDP, as over 80 percent of #crop yields and 75 percent of European food production depend on 🐝bee #pollination." —Minister of Agriculture of Hungary 🇭🇺 István Nagy euobserver.com/opinion/14660…

Hi Jeff - thanks as always for engaging. The piece is an Opinion-editorial by the Enviro Minister of an IPBES member State - it’s shared to alert our community to a viewpoint - not to endorse the stats (as u know IPBES has a lengthy Report on this from 2016)

Yes, I know - but the stats in the viewpoint contradict those in the IPBES report!

Indeed - we knew the piece would generate dialogue when shared - happy for instance to see the side-bar on your own feed re. economics and adulteration when you shared it in turn. One of our aims on Twitter is to feed constructive community dialogue

It worries me that incorrect statements such as "over 80 percent of crop yields and 75 percent of European food production depend on bee pollination" cause harm to the cause of pollinator conservation. Because they're demonstrably not true and can be seen as "fake news" by some.

Replying to @JeffOllerton
A valid point - which required the article to be shared within the IPBES community to be made in counterpoint.
