Not as heartbreaking as being not good enough for both.

How did you get this photo of me, in a story about me (with the names changed)?

My Cousin and I signed up for a Street Fighter tournament at Blockbuster back in the day. We practiced every day and had competitive matches. Our confidence was sky high heading into the tournament. On the day of the competition, we both lost in the first round & didn’t even win 1 round in the game (or even come close.) We were doing basic moves while the other competitors were stringing together long combinations. It was a complete and total ass whooping. We laughed because we were so sure we were gonna dominate. In reality, we both sucked, but since our skills were equal, our matches were exciting. When we came across someone who actually knew how to play, we got humbled quick 😂

It's only because all my friends are button mashers, where as I had basic strats and would pick up fighting games quickly. My mates would often ban me from using certain characters / moves, but I'd still beat them just by understanding the basics.

That just means he doesn't want to grind against better competition.
