I misinterpreted this such that it fit my seventh grade son's current experiences. He's a DM at his middle school's D&D club and he's had a hell of a time with his players not being able to figure out encounters and having to hint their way through for them.

Straight up? Just filling a room with random objects and rolling with whatever your players do is way more satisfying than most of the ones I come up with.
