This sort of thing is why they make STEM students learn LaTeX. No mistaking \frac {6} {2(1+2)} for \frac {6(1+2)} {2}

Either it's 1 or 9. There's a reason why this particular notation is unpopular.

Why do I feel like if write this as 1, my algebra teacher will mark it wrong and some how make a r or a y show up there. Then when I tell her she's wrong because she has an undeclared variable, I will still get it wrong. Even though she's wrong because it's 1.

This is actually a little tricky, I don't remember if multiplication through attached brackets — 2(1+2) — have different priority than multiplication through a symbol. Curious.
