this is to prevent players from potentially corrupting a save, earning achievements unfairly, or breaking a co-op partner's game

That sounds like nothing but lazy excuses Corrupt a save-make a new one unfair achievements- disable achievements on that save file breaking coop partner game - don't allow cheats in co-op
