I think there's a way on mobile to do it for free once, atleast that's what I did. Sorry that I can't be much help beyond this

yeah, stupid annoying, at least you can change it once for free, I changed mine because I realized years later that the RANDOMLY GENERATED gamertag I got was actually a bit racist
