I wonder if Twitter did plan an edit button at some point, but the demand and whining for it just got so intense that Twitter made it an inside joke to just never add an edit button.

I would like it, but can see it potentially being problematic. As long as the edits give all who interacted with the original an alert of some sort as well as say "edited." If you can edit without showing that it's been edited before...it's a problem.
