Yeah, people refusing to use they intentionally are just dumb. They need to realize that at this point it's so far gone from the ""correct"" usage they have in their head and that it can be used to refer to singular gender neutral subjects.

I think when people ask that, they’re referring to birth sex. But yeah, use they by default if you don’t know someone’s identity

I'm sorry, maybe I'm a bad person but I feel weird using "they" for a single person. I just can't get it into my head and neither can I just automatically do it in a conversation.
