Honestly after Minecraft 1.17, I feel that Minecraft would finally be like a full on "completed game". I can't imagine what they would do for 1.18 at this point. Everything feels nearly complete at this point.

1.12.2 is the best and final version in my eyes. Every addition in and after 1.13 doesn't feel vanilla anymore. It feels too much like a bunch of mods.

Can definitely see that honestly, I prefer 1.8 as the final completion. Its just fun to play the future versions sometimes.

an end update would make it feel a bit more complete, maybe even a ‘building update’ for stuff like vertical slabs and other blocks that would be nice to add

They are trying to revamp every part of the game, first villages, then the nether, and now caves and mountains. I would say it would be finished once the end isn’t revamped to a place you actually want to visit.
