What I heard was that Gender Reveal parties were originally made specifically to target trans people. When it's time, the doctor will inform someone about the baby's gender. Then they hide it in a balloon and pop it and if it explodes - blue = boy pink = girl.
There are other methods than a balloon, but the balloon is mostly common. They also seem to gather family members and friends to reveal the baby's gender.
