Instead of focusing on Mike and 1997 for lore, I think people should more be focusing on these guys that appear in the trash zone after beating Spamton. They reveal a bunch of lore about not just Spamton, but also some important stuff about the funny gaster character.

In Deltarune, Spamton has mentioned constantly the year 1997 and somebody named Mike. While both of these seem to be important aspects of lore of some kind, I think people are looking too far deep into it. It's referencing a commercial from 1997 called, "Mike's big shot soda"

This is why stuff like the Snowgrave route is possible because unlike Undertale, where the game is centered around, "you", Deltarune is a game filled with multiple characters in which you can manipulate to do whatever you want. Hypothetically, these aren't your choices.

Toby Fox has repeatedly said, "your choices don't matter", in Deltarune. However, immediately after launching Deltarune, it appears your choices do matter. Ralsei even says, "Kris your choices matter too". It's a play on words, YOUR choices don't matter, but other's do.

It's interesting because in Undertale, "you", was always used so much I guess players just got used to it and didn't notice in Deltarune the difference between, "Kris", and, "you". Attention to detail everyone :3

This is more supported at the end of the Snowgrave route with Noelle's dialogue. Where she describes, "a voice unlike Kris's" referring to the player.
Theoretically, your choices don't matter in this world, but you can manipulate others to do your choices.

Kris and the player are two separate entities in Deltarune.
When Kris does an action, the game will say, "Kris did X" (dance, self care, etc)
When the player does an action, the game will say, "You did X". The, "you", tho is more prominent in Snowgrave and barely noticeable.

I can understand messing them up once or twice, but if you actually disagree and believe that it's, "up to your interpretation", that not only sounds transphobic, but also goes against the lore of the game. Kris and the player are two completely different characters in the game.

Kris' pronouns are they/them, it isn't up for debate. Anyone who disagrees is either transphobic or didn't pay attention to deltarune lore.
